Inzimam / Migrant Boat Disaster Survivor
The shipwreck occurred in international waters off Pylos two hours after midnight on 14 June 2023 of the fishing vessel Andrianna which was estimated to be carrying around 750 migrants and had left Tobruk, Libya on 9 June 2023 bound for Italy. During the rescue operation by the Greek authorities, 104 people were rescued, including Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Afghans and Palestinians, while 82 dead were recovered. Hundreds more are missing. The official statement of the Coast Guard that approached the boat is that “they saw the boat turn right, then a sharp left turn and then another right turn so large that it caused the boat to capsize” but a series of evidence presented by the BBC, statements of the dispatcher of the UN as well as publications of the New York Times, Le Monde, El Pais and Al Jazeera deny this version. Five survivors testified, both to the Coast Guard and to the Kalamata investigator, that the fishing vessel sank while being towed by a Greek vessel. The Coast Guard had stated that there was no video footage of the incident, which is contradicted by a document in the docket, according to which the captain of the Coast Guard vessel gave the prosecution a CD with audio-visual material from the vessel’s cameras. The Supreme Court has asked the authorities investigating the causes of the accident to strictly observe the confidentiality of the investigations. For his part, the UN envoy for Refugees in the Mediterranean requested an independent investigation. (Source : Wikipedia)
